Green Collaboration and Recognition
At Equinix, being “green” is part of being operationally lean but also doing the right thing. We’re always looking for new ways to reduce energy and water use in our data centers. We also seek to play an active role in the “greening” of our business and be a leader in evaluating and deploying innovative solutions. The following lists some of our engagements and some of the awards we received as a result of our efforts:
Smart Energy Decisions Innovation Award 2019
Equinix was awarded as a winner in the Customer Project Award: Data Center Energy Storage & Microgrids category for its 37 MW Bloom Energy fuel cell deployment.
U.S. EPA Green Power Leadership Award for Excellence in Green Power Use
Two years in a row (2017 and 2018) Equinix has been selected for the Excellence in Green Power category of the EPA’s Green Power Leadership Awards. The annual awards recognize America's leading green power users for their commitment and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation's voluntary green power market.
U.S. EPA Green Power Partnership
As of October 2018, Equinix ranks #6 on the U.S. EPA’s National Top 100 list of green power users. Equinix reported a total of 1,475 GWh of green power usage in 2017 representing 76% of our U.S. load including Verizon data centers. Equinix had debuted in 2015, at a rank of 18th in the Top 100 of renewable energy users in the nation. In addition, we are recognized for our Long Term Green Power Contracts; having executed 225 MW of long-term wind contracts.
NAREIT 2016 Leader in the Light Award
The National Associate of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT) honored Equinix in the data centers category for demonstrating superior sustainability practices across all sustainability criteria including ESG (environment, social, and governance) practices.
Corporate Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles Signatory
Equinix participates in a joint initiative with the World Wildlife Fund and the World Resources Institute (WWF/WRI) to help the private sector more effectively seek renewable energy from traditional utility partners and developers.
Business Renewables Center (BRC) Advisory Board Member
Equinix sits on the BRC Advisory Board and participates in numerous annual events to share best practices and promote collaboration among corporates on renewable energy procurement.
Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA)
Equinix is a member of REBA which helping grow large buyer demand for renewable power and helping utilities and others meet it.
MSCI Global Sustainability Indexes
Since June 1, 2015 Equinix has been a constituent of this environmental, social and governance (ESG) index.
American Business Act on Climate Pledge signatory
Equinix was one of 154 companies that signed a pledge to demonstrate support for action on climate change.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Award for Leadership in Green Innovation
Recognized for leading the industry by building and maintaining state-of-the-art green data centers across the Asia-Pacific region. Awarded for 2015 & 2014
We are members of techUK, a UK data center trade association. Equinix has a seat on the Data Centre Council and representation in a number of other committees, including the Climate Change Agreement User Group, EU Emissions Trading Scheme Sub-Group and the Data Centres Technical Committee.
EU Code of Conduct Best Practice for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres
Equinix participates in the EU Code of Conduct Best Practice for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres, an initiative led by the European Union’s Joint Research Center. Over 40% of Equinix’s EMEA footprint is covered, establishing Equinix as a Corporate Participant.

Equinix is a member of The Green Grid focusing on best practices and innovation towards sustainable IT.
Cooling Energy Science and Technology Singapore (CoolestSG) Consortium
Equinix is a member of the CoolestSG, geared towards developing and accelerating the deployment and commercialization of innovative cooling technologies, which can be applied to buildings, data centers and industry.
2014 International Datacentre and Cloud Award for Environmental Sustainability
Equinix received this award recognizing AM3 for its innovative cooling and energy sharing design, resulting in optimized power usage effectiveness (PUE) and significantly reduced CO2 emissions.
